INFORMACJE O PUBLIKACJI

Materia światła i ciała. Alabaster w rzeźbie niderlandzkiej XVI i XVII wieku / Matter of light and flesh. Alabaster in the Netherlandish sculpture of the 16th and17th centuries,
exhibition catalogue, National Museum in Gdańsk, ed. Jacek Kriegseisen, with Aleksandra Lipińska, Gdańsk 2011, 360 pp., 170 fig.

This generously illustrated bilingual publication (with both essays and catalogue notes in Polish and English) is released as an accompaniment to the exhibition held at the Green Gate branch of the National Museum in Gdańsk from 15 November 2011 until 15 March 2012.

It comprises essays by art historian Aleksandra Lipińska and conservator Anna Kriegseisen, as well as catalogue notes written by specialists from Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium.

The exhibition showcases the phenomenon of alabaster`s popularity in the transalpine countries in the 16th and 17th centuries. Focusing above all on works made in the studios of the Southern Netherlands, it examines not only the genres, forms and themes typical for such works, but also the sculptural properties and aesthetic qualities of alabaster itself. The exhibition and the catalogue profile the more than 70 exhibits from Polish and foreign museum and private collections, some of which have never before been on show. The Renaissance Netherlandish works are also contrasted with examples of medieval alabaster sculpture as well as early modern pieces executed in workshops outside the Netherlands.
